Childbirth Education
Pregnancy is a joyous, exciting and sometimes uncertain journey. Education, knowledgeable doctors and staff and a caring atmosphere close to home can make all the difference. At Northwest Health - Porter, we’re here to make the most memorable nine months of your life go smoothly and to help your pregnancy be a healthy one.
Each month, the prenatal education team will meet with expecting parents to go over the ins and outs of childbirth. Classes cover a variety of topics, including:
- Childbirth classes and education
- Breastfeeding
- Newborn classes and eduication
All classes are free and require registration in advance.
Childbirth Education Class
Childbirth Education (Virtual)
This four-part series of classes covering all aspects of pregnancy, labor, postpartum and newborn care. We will discuss natural coping methods as well as the use of pain medication and epidural anesthesia. Your partner or support person is encouraged to attend with you. Register in your fourth or fifth month of pregnancy and take the classes in your seventh or eighth month. Call (219) 983-8543 with questions. Advanced registration is required. Fast-track Childbirth Education
Spend just one full Saturday and learn all of the aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. Massage, aromatherapy and breathing techniques are taught, in addition to pain management options. Grandparent Class
This class is great for first-time grandparents. It teaches child-care basics and how to use new equipment. It helps with the realization that while mom/infant care standards have changed, the basics of love, support and joy remain the same. Newborn & Infant Care Class
Baby Basics
Build confidence around how to nurture your baby’s development and ensure your newborn’s safety. This class includes topics like getting ready for baby, bathing, diapering, signs of illness, safety and newborn behaviors. Great for first time parents. Breastfeeding Class
This one-session class coordinated by an internationally board-certified lactation consultant is geared for expectant and new parents. Designed to promote successful breastfeeding, the program will discuss the benefits of breastfeeding and how to get started.
